New Magazine Features Courtney Jolliff’s Original Artwork

Courtney Jolliff has been commissioned to produce original artwork for the first two issues of inquisitive, a new magazine from Heterodox Academy.
In the first issue, on the theme of “The Nerve,” Courtney painted a portrait of Arthur Lovejoy, described in the accompanying article by John K. Wilson as “The Heroic Hypocrite of Academic Freedom.”

In the second issue, Courtney’s work entitled “Hope” (shown above) accompanies an article about community medical schools, which often serve rural and urban communities. Asked to paint a scene with an ambulance on a rural road, Courtney drew on his own family’s experience to enact a powerful scene of tension and love.
“I decided to pull from the experience of seeing my own Grandma Chicago being taken away in an ambulance,” Courtney explains. “Everything about painting this was so emotional, down to every single blade of grass, but towards the end of the painting, I felt nothing but hope, gratitude, and closure.”
“Since the making of this piece,” he says, “I've found myself in such a better mental state. Still amazing how art can have a positive effect on the world.”
The painting “Hope” has been sold for $400 and the “Arthur Lovejoy” portrait is available at a cost of $300 plus shipping. Both works are acrylic on found cardboard and each features the intense colors and brushwork for which Jolliff is known.
